CHIP is an acronym for Children’s Health Insurance
Program. CHIPS insurance provides insurance benefits for children
who would not otherwise have coverage. Children may not have insurance for a variety of reasons including their
parent losing a job, the parent’s job not providing health insurance, or simply the excessive expense of
traditional health coverage. Regardless of the reason, a CHIP program can help cover medical costs for uninsured
kids.
CHIPS Insurance - An Overview
CHIPS health insurance is generally available to all
families regardless of income level. In the past, regulations have been enforced which kept children whose
families fit into a higher income bracket from being able to acquire assistance through a CHIP program.
Today, however, in most states families at any income level are eligible for protection. Any child up to age
19 who would not otherwise have health insurance can be covered by CHIP. In most cases, the family must renew
CHIP coverage on an annual basis in order to maintain the policy. With CHIP, some families will receive
medical care for their children free of charge. Others may be required to pay a small, affordable fee at the
time of an appointment at a doctor’s office.
CHIP Insurance - What You Should Know
Even children with a preexisting medical condition
are eligible to receive CHIP insurance. The coverage is offered by legitimate,
reputable health insurance companies who have contracted with the state government to be able to offer the CHIP
program. That means that children enrolled in CHIP will get the same high level of service and responsiveness
that the insurance company extends to each of its other members. The process for making appointments is
convenient and identical to the process which other insured members must follow. The parent or guardian of the
child covered by CHIP selects a service provider from the insurance company’s directory and schedules an
appointment. The child’s health insurance card looks exactly like those issued to other insured customers. The
parent or guardian simply shows the insurance card to the health care provider to receive benefits. CHIP
guarantees that children receive the medical attention they require either without charge or at a reduced
rate.
